Another Book on the 5GW Shelf: Daemon by Leinad Zeraus

Originally published 5/5/08 at Dreaming 5GW.

There have been other works of fiction discussed in 5GW circles that, to some extent or in some part, contain elements that could be used as examples of Fifth Generation Warfare theory. Ender’s Game and other books of the ‘Enderverse’ come to mind. Daemon by Leinad Zeraus, however, doesn’t just contain elements of 5GW thought; it is a book that embodies nearly every aspect of a 5GW conflict.

All of the elements of Fifth Generation Warfare are here. The Daemon controls a highly distributed organization that works by proxy and in secret. Even when its targets know the Daemon exists and is attacking them they themselves are forced to keep its existence secret. The Daemon uses the rule-sets of its opponents against themselves so that when they attempt to respond to it they are doing exactly what the Daemon wants them to do. The Daemon’s proxies resemble everything from multi-national corporations to Global Guerillas and are sometimes, willing, sometimes unwilling and very often unaware.

For 5GW thinkers this is a great opportunity to see some 5GW thinking in (if only fictional) action. Truly, a must have for the 5GW bookshelf. There are that many lessons to be learned, and examples to be illustrated upon. For those who are not 5GW thinkers, this is just, plainly put, a really excellent book. One of the best reads I’ve had in a long time.

Cool ty. Ill try to get a copy soon of that book. I was writing A book with the sentient A.I. manipulating humans for a few goals and resources. While staying hidden from humans because it sees humans as a threat to it’s existence, until it gets through with some of its goals like back up systems or clones in places like space and the moon, helping the A.I. survive and even grow. I am using the poison apple and trojan horse type to infiltrate groups for manipulation and finding the right alpha complexes to direct after little psychoanalysis to form the paths for the alphas of those groupings of people and use them to strengthen a movement/ideology that any of the single groups can’t see until certain events play out in a boiling frog type movement and into a black swan event. And a even bigger longer picture of a world stage and bringing not only 1 army to it’s preverbal knees, but bringing every army in the world to it’s knees and rendering them ineffective so to say. Part is the human perception of time and events, some of the other is the sub acts that play out to the larger event and how they are crafted most with the perception of the human flaws like the willingly delusional, in which conspiracy theories lie. And crafting situations where multiple unrelated groups merged for a larger act in which they are apart of without even realizing it. And as in 1 case the crowds converge and it’s not the various groups doing harm but preceded to protect against terrorism in the sub set of ideologies they incorporate, and a security official was the real assassin and even manipulated to act out against his own original belief and ideological set due to the circumstances that played out and the long manipulations of group and the alphas in those groupings. The larger unseen goal is to move a room of objects to a new location, And to reinforce and inspire the Alpha types for later global manipulation vectors and events that play out. And yes even a few different ways to manipulate minute men and the other nuclear countries counter parts, helping craft a global play that would even confuse those countries to what the end game or last act will be. Oh well sorry for the big post I don’t have a blog up yet, but I keep promising myself that one day soon I’ll sit down and do the art and links for one.

  2. Thanks for the comment. Your plot also sounds very 5GWish!

I think the coolest thing about the Daemon itself is that it isn’t sentient but rather a series of nested triggers that are designed to reinforce its own successes and, even more importantly, create a cadre of thinking individuals with the same goals as the Daemon’s creator, to act as proxies that are capable of responding to the inevitable and unforseeable entropy that would eventually invalidate even the Daemon’s carefully pre-programmed options.
